Keep Your Loved Ones Safe: Understanding Fall Risks and Prevention

By: Amy Keating, PT, MSPT

Falls are a growing concern for our senior community in the U.S., and they pose serious health risks. Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 and older will experience a fall each year? According to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults. The good news is many of these falls are preventable!

What Increases Fall Risk?

Several factors can contribute to falls, including:

  • Impaired strength, mobility, or balance

  • Poor vision and hearing

  • Osteoporosis

  • Chronic health conditions (like arthritis and diabetes)

  • Polypharmacy (taking multiple medications)

  • Environmental hazards in the home

Where Do Falls Most Often Happen?

The most common places for falls include:

  • Bathrooms

  • Bedrooms

  • Living rooms

Simple Home Modifications

Making a few changes around the house can significantly reduce fall risk:

  • Remove or secure throw rugs with non-slip backing

  • Install handrails on stairs and grab bars in the bathroom

  • Enhance lighting with nightlights or motion-activated lights

  • Keep hallways and rooms clear of clutter

Lifestyle Changes for Fall Prevention

Adopting a proactive lifestyle can make a huge difference:

  • Exercise regularly to improve strength, balance, and flexibility

  • Wear proper footwear—non-slip and supportive

  • Avoid walking in socks around the house

  • Have regular hearing and vision checks

  • Use mobility aids (like canes or walkers) if recommended

  • Stand up slowly to avoid dizziness

  • Consider an alert system (like a bracelet or smartwatch)

  • Declutter your home for safer movement

  • Discuss medications with your healthcare provider

  • Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet

  • Keep a regular sleep schedule
